Confused between GATE and GRE?

To ride among waters between the two banks of the same river is tricky and would involve lot of efforts juggling between both the sides. During the end of a bachelor course a student stands at the crossroad of their future career. It is a make or break point in student’s career where they need to decide between whether to study abroad or stay in India as per their dream job and academic and financial profile.

The primary difference between GRE and GATE is that GATE is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering which  is taken by students who want to get into IITs, NITs and PSUs whereas GRE is taken by students who want to study overseas. The common points between both the exams could be said as basic math and general aptitude that both the tests cover. GRE is a Graduate Record Examination which needs to be taken by a non-engineering student as well if the student plans to study overseas. So the point of concern is only for engineering students who wish to take higher education.

Following factors need to be considered while selecting between the two:

1. Strong interest in core technical subjects

GATE is strongly recommended for students who have a strong foundation in core technical subjects whereas one might still ace the GRE despite being not so good at math or other technical subjects. The kind of curriculum student gets to study after being successful in cracking either of these two exams is also different. MS programs in abroad emphasis more on hands on and practical implementation of knowledge whereas IITs and job profiles in PSU need to have a strong engineering core.

2. Personality profile of a student

Students who are more adaptable and flexible will adjust to a new culture in better ways compared to those who are reserved and shy. Also, some students enjoy interacting with people from other cultures more and enjoy being part of a multi-cultural society.

3. Financial profile

If a student decides to do M.Tech in India, it will cost him or her approximately 50 to 80 thousand in a government college for the entire course whereas MS in US will cost up to $60,000-80,000 for the entire course.

4. Career goals

The type of job in terms of quality of work, job satisfaction and pay will differ for someone working in India viz e vie someone working in abroad. Students who are aiming at working in PSUs get paid across 8 to 12 lakhs per annum whereas starting salary of an engineer overseas starts from $60,000.
