In 2022, the UK was the third most popular destination for Indians to study. Approximately one lakh Indian students flew to the UK for the education. The primary reasons to study in the UK were:

1. Acceptance of three-year Indian Undergraduate Degrees for Masters Programs

2. High quality of education

3. Great job opportunities after graduation

4. Easy pathway to immigration after graduation

 

Even with these benefits, many students do not apply to British universities because of the cost involved. The average annual cost ranges between Rs 10 – Rs 20 lakhs and annual living costs range between Rs 8 – Rs 15 lakhs.
Fortunately, there are numerous scholarships available to Indian students. In this article we will highlight 10 scholarships available to Indian students who want to study in the UK:

1. GREAT Scholarships India

This scholarship program offers funding of upto 10,000 pounds per year to Indian students who want to pursue a postgraduate program in any field. The scholarship covers tuition fees and living expenses. To be eligible, applicants must have an offer to study at a UK university. Students can apply for a GREAT scholarship here.

2. Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to Indian students who want to pursue a master’s degree in the UK. The scholarship covers tuition fees, living expenses and travel costs. To be eligible, applicants must have a first class or upper second class degree. Students can apply for this scholarship here. 

3. Chevening Scholarship

Indian citizens with an undergraduate degree and a minimum of two years of work experience can apply for the Chevening scholarship. This scholarship covers all expenses – tuition, living and travel. To be eligible, students must hold at least two years of work experience, must be willing to go back to their home country for at least two years and should have applied to at least three universities with one unconditional offer. 4. Saltire Scholarship

Through the Saltire Scholarship, students who have accepted an offer from a university in Scotland can avail 8,000 pounds in scholarship. Once a student is selected, they must agree to participate in Saltire networking events as needed. You can apply for the Saltire Scholarship here.

5. Charles Wallace Scholarship

This scholarship is for early to mid career professionals who aim to pursue their master’s degree in the UK. Candidates must be between the ages of 23 and 28 and must have received an offer to study a master’s degree in Arts or History Conservation. This scholarship includes tuition, living and travel expenses. Candidates are required to submit a portfolio of work along with their application. The link to apply is here.

6. Rhodes Scholarship

This scholarship is meant for students who wish to pursue their education at the University of Oxford. Students can study either undergraduate or postgraduate programs through this scholarship. It covers the full tuition fee and living expenses upto 1,515 pounds. The Rhodes trust looks for students of outstanding intellect, character, leadership and commitment to service. 7. Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Students who receive an offer from the University of Cambridge can apply for this scholarship. It is meant for students who wish to pursue their masters or PhD degree. It covers the full tuition fee and living expenses upto 1,562 pounds per year. For more information and to apply, click here.

8. KC Mahindra Scholarship 

This scholarship is provided by the Mahindra trust. Scholars are awarded Rs 5 lakhs – Rs 10 lakhs towards their education in the UK. Candidates should have secured at least a first class in their undergraduate degree. You can apply for the scholarship here.

9. Felix Scholarship

This scholarship is meant for students who wish to pursue their post graduate studies at either the University of Oxford, University of Reading or the University of London. It covers the entire tuition fee, travel expenses and living expenses of 1,347 pounds per month. Students can apply here.

10. Higher Education Scholarships  

Finally, this is not just one – but a collection of scholarships students can apply to based on the university they get an admit for. Students should note that most of these scholarships are meant for students who have exceptional merit, and who can prove that they cannot pursue their education in the UK without the scholarship. As a general rule, students should prepare the following documents to apply for the scholarship:

1. IELTS score (at least band 7)

2. One to Two Page Resume

3. A Statement of Purpose

4. 2-3 Letters of Recommendation

5. A portfolio of work (for arts / architecture programs)
