IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English Language Test that is co-owned by the British Council and IDP. It is accepted by 10,000 universities. This test checks a students’ proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students applying for all levels of programs – undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral are required to take a test like IELTS.

Who should take the IELTS?

Taking a language proficiency test like the IELTS is a requirement by all universities abroad. Students will need to take the IELTS (or a test like IELTS; example: TOEFL) to get admission. This IELTS is especially popular among universities in the UK, Canada and Australia.

How important is a good IELTS score?

While the score needed in IELTS depends on the university, securing an overall band of 6.5 or more out of 9.0 will give students access to most programs. Sometimes, universities might also have section wise cut offs – so students need to be careful about this.

What the IELTS tests?

The goal of the IELTS is to check if students are capable of communicating with classmates and completing coursework effectively in English at the university level. Thus, the IELTS tests four skills in English: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.
