Student Counsellor – Undergraduate Programs Role and Responsibilities:
• Help students identify the right major to pursue in college through discussions with them / their parents.
• Assess the student's profile and develop a customized roadmap to strengthen the profile.
• Identify the right set of universities, programs & countries to apply to based on profile, budget & goals and through detailed research.
• Create & share application checklists with students based on their requirements.
• Brainstorm essay, LOR & resume content with students.
• Review student essays, LORs & resumes.
• Help students fill application forms through portals like the common app, coalition, UCAS, university websites or through partner university portals
• Help students fill application forms for boarding school, summer school, research programs, internships etc.
• Identify scholarships students can apply to and help them fill individual scholarship forms, CSS application forms etc.
• Identify the total cost of education for the student, documents they can show for finances & connect students to partner banks for loans if needed.
• Prepare and share a checklist of visa documents, help fill visa forms & prepare students for visas through mock visa interviews.
• Connect students to partner accommodation platforms for identifying accommodation.
• Take seminars & webinars as needed. Eg: country, university, program, job opportunities, application process pre-departure seminars etc.
• Regularly meet with students & parents, share progress reports and updates to ensure that all application deadlines are met.
• Research universities, programs, profile building activities, job opportunities, application processes, study abroad news as and when needed.
• Participate in event organization, in events as needed
Requirements:
• Knowledge:
o Excellent command over English and Hindi or Marathi.
o Knows the study abroad process, cost, documents required, eligibility.
o Has counselled students going to US, UK
o Knowledge of profile building activities, SAT, ACT, AP exams
o Knows the application process & forms to US, UK universities
o In depth knowledge of excel, powerpoint & word
o Having any counselling certificates is a bonus • Skills:
o Excellent conversational skills
o Ability to probe & identify student interests
o Should be able to manage multiple students at once
o Ability to conduct in-depth research
o Organized manner of working – detailed planning, record keeping
o Ability to connect student’s case to apt programs, universities & profile building opportunities • Behavior:
o Proactive – initiates conversations with students / parents regarding next steps, thinks for the student, reminds students of upcoming deadlines
o Double checks all work / research before sending to students / parents
o Responsive (quick reply to texts / emails; picks up calls; if busy explains to student when they will call / text back)
o Gives dates / deadlines to students / themselves and adheres to them
o Extreme attention to detail.
o Does not give up – does whatever it takes to get students into the best universities.
o Pleasant & positive personality • Deal-breakers:
o Non-responsive (does not pick up calls, reply to emails)
o Misses work / application deadlines
o Not willing to perform in-depth research
o Over-commits to or demoralizes students
o Claims to be knowledgeable without knowing details
o Afraid to say “I don’t know – let me research & get back to you”
o Lack of integrity
