OVERVIEW
What is the TOEFL Test?
The TOEFL iBT is an academic English test widely accepted by universities and embassies to gauge a student's ability to communicate effectively in an academic setting. This ensures students can understand lectures, participate in discussions, and complete coursework. Over 11,500 colleges & universities worldwide accept the TOEFL iBT, making it a valuable credential for international students. The test can be taken online at home or at a physical testing center, offering flexibility to test-takers. It evaluates all four key English skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing, providing a well-rounded picture of a student's proficiency.
SYLLABUS
Test Syllabus
Listening: This section tests how you interpret spoken English. You'll listen to 3 lectures each 3-5 minutes in length and 2 conversations each 3 minutes in length and then answer questions that test your understanding of the main ideas, details, supporting arguments, and speaker purpose. Each lecture will have 6 questions and each conversation will have 5 questions.
Reading: This section assesses your ability to understand academic texts. You'll read 2 passages each approximately 700 words long, with 10 questions per passage on academic subjects and answer questions testing main ideas, inferences, comprehension of information, and the author's purpose.
Writing: The writing section measures your written English skills in an academic setting. You'll complete two tasks. The first task is an integrated writing task (20 minutes). You will read a short passage, listen to a lecture and then write a response. In the second task (20 mins), you will listen to a classroom discussion – and will be expected to state and support your opinion.
Speaking: This computer-based section evaluates your spoken English fluency and ability to communicate effectively in academic situations. You'll complete four tasks: introducing yourself and speaking about a familiar topic, summarizing information from a lecture, expressing your opinion on a course-related issue, and integrating information from a reading passage and lecture. For each question, you will get 15 – 30 seconds to prepare and will have 45 – 60 seconds to speak.

TOEFL Scoring
Your score from all four sections are added to generate the final TOEFL score out of 120. Most universities have a cutoff between 80-90 while some high ranked universities have a cut-off of 100. In addition to this, universities might also have section wise cutoffs.

ETS has recently introduced the concept of “super scoring”. This means students who attend the TOEFL multiple times can choose select the best score of each section from each attempt and add those to generate a final “Super Score”. See the table below to see how this works. The highlighted scores are the scores selected to generate the super score:

While super-scoring is beneficial to students, one must be cautious as not all universities allow students to report their “super-scores”. Universities might mandate that students report all four section scores from one attempt only. Therefore, it is best if students work towards achieving their target score in one attempt itself.

PREPARATION STRATEGY
How To Prepare For TOEFL
Most students who score 90+ in the TOEFL spend at least three weeks preparing if they have already studied for the GRE or GMAT and spend at least six weeks preparing if they haven’t studied for the GRE or GMAT.

It is recommended that students take the TOEFL at least three months before the application deadline to allow for sufficient time to retake the exam if needed.
Set a target score based on the university you want an admit from
Start by taking a diagnostic test to understand your current level
Identify 1 – 1.5 hours of free time daily for TOEFL preparation
Gather the appropriate materials for study
Go through the syllabus and make a detailed plan to cover the entire syllabus
Practice questions daily. Reading theory does not help improve scores
Maintain an error log to record which questions you’re getting incorrect
Take a test after completing each topic to get a realistic understanding of your preparation level
Take full length mock tests once you are done completing 70% of the syllabus
Take at least 5 mock tests. Analyze your performance after each test and work on weak areas before taking the next test.
