OVERVIEW
What is the IELTS Test?
The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is a commonly required exam for international students seeking admission to universities where English is the primary language of instruction. This test assesses an individual's English proficiency across four key areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Universities and embassies utilize these results to gauge a student's ability to succeed in an academic environment where English is the main mode of communication. The IELTS exam is available in both online and offline formats, catering to the needs of a wider range of test-takers, and is accepted by more than 11,000 universities worldwide.

Test Syllabus
Listening: You'll listen to four recordings (lectures, conversations). The first two deal with an everyday, social situation while the third and fourth recordings deal with educational and training situations.  You will hear the recordings only once – and the recordings could be in any accent – British, Australian, North American etc.
Reading: This section tests your ability to understand complex academic texts. All the topics are of general interest to students at undergraduate or postgraduate level. You will encounter three long passages (narrative, descriptive or discursive / argumentative) and answer a variety of questions in 60 minutes.
Writing: This section evaluates your written English skills in an academic setting. You'll complete two tasks: Task 1 involves describing some visual information in your own words (a graph, table, chart or diagram), while Task 2 requires you to give a point of view, argument or problem which you need to discuss.
Speaking: In part 1 of the speaking interview, you are asked about yourself and about familiar topics, such as home, family or interests. In part 2, you are shown a card with a topic, given one minute to prepare and then asked to talk about it. In part 3, further questions will be asked about the topic in more detail.

IELTS Scoring
The average of your section scores is your final IELTS band score. Most universities have a cutoff between band 6.0 – 6.5 while some high ranked universities have a cut-off of band 7.0. In addition to this, universities might also have section wise cutoffs.

If you feel that you didn’t do your best in any particular section of the IELTS, then you can re-take one section of the IELTS within 60 days of your original test date. Additionally, students are allowed to choose only one section for the re-take and can re-take a section only once per full attempt.

While the one-skill retake feature is beneficial to students, not all universities accept it, and students must check with their university whether they accept the one-skill retake score.

PREPARATION STRATEGY
How To Prepare For IELTS
Most students who score 6.5 or higher on the IELTS spend at least three weeks preparing if they have already studied for the GRE or GMAT and spend at least six weeks preparing if they haven’t studied for the GRE or GMAT.

It is recommended that students take the IELTS at least three months before the application deadline to allow for sufficient time to retake the exam if needed.
Set a target score based on the university you want an admit from

Maintain an error log to record which questions you’re getting incorrect
Take a test after completing each topic to get a realistic understanding of your preparation level
Take full length mock tests once you are done completing 70% of the syllabus
Take at least 5 mock tests. Analyze your performance after each test and work on weak areas before taking the next test.
