Note:
Students who haven’t secured a job by the time they graduate can change their status from "Foreign Student" to "Designated Activities" and then proceed with job-hunting.
A "Designated Activities" visa is initially granted for 6 months, but if you haven't found a job, you can extend your residence status for another 6 months, up to a maximum of 1 year.
National universities in Japan are government-funded, keeping tuition low and standardized, while Private universities set their own fees, making them more expensive due to better facilities and less government support.
The Cost of living in Japan ranges in between ¥ 80,000  to ¥ 130,000 per year.

Work Regulations While Studying

Common part-time jobs for students include retail, Sales, food service, Language Teacher, Factory worker and administrative roles.
The hourly wage for part-time jobs in Japan typically ranges from ¥800  - ¥1400 per hour. In some fields like tutoring or specialized roles, wages can be higher.
Students can find part-time jobs through university job boards, online portals (GaijinPot, Baitoru), convenience stores, restaurants, private tutoring, and networking.

The Spring (April) intake is the primary admission period for most universities, while the Fall (September/October) intake is offered by select universities, mainly for international students; deadlines vary, so checking individual university websites is recommended.
Scholarships
Japan offers four main types of scholarships for international students. The MEXT Scholarship, funded by the Japanese government, fully covers tuition, a monthly stipend, and airfare for undergraduate, postgraduate, and research students. The JASSO Scholarship provides financial aid of around ¥48,000 per month for privately funded students. Many universities offer their own scholarships, which are merit or need-based and may include tuition waivers and stipends. Additionally, private and NGO scholarships, such as the Honjo International Scholarship and Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship, support postgraduate and research students with financial grants.
MEXT Scholarships – Fully funded by the Japanese government for UG, PG, research, and specialized training students. Covers tuition, stipend, and travel.
JASSO Scholarships – Offers financial aid to self-funded students, including the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship and Student Exchange Support Program.
University Scholarships – Many universities like Kyoto University provide merit-based or need-based scholarships for international students.
Private & NGO Scholarships – Foundations like Honjo International Scholarship and NIG Fellowship offer financial aid for postgraduates and researchers.

Grading System
Japanese universities use a 4.0 GPA scale along with letter grades. Below is a comparison with the Indian CGPA system, where anything below 5.0 CGPA is considered a fail.

Standardized Tests & English Language Tests

SAT/ACT is not mandatory but may be required for some universities.
EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students) is required for most undergraduate programs, especially if taught in Japanese.
Universities might conduct their own specific entrance exams at the masters level.
GRE / GMAT is recommended for business programs at the masters level.
TOEFL & IELTS are accepted for English-taught programs.
PTE & Duolingo are accepted by some universities but not widely recognized.
